Dear Future Fraser Heights Student,

            There are many types of things you have to do so get ready for a library adventure! To me, the most important part of this course was to feel the atmosphere and to help others get the kind of books they are looking for. The students are our number one priority. As long as you learn the Dewey Decimal System, you are ready to go for this course. That system you have to memorize or it may become a problem shelving away book. Some duties that I’ve done in this course were doing assignments such as finding out the population of other schools in the surrey district 36 areas. Also, we got the chance in class to make this blog! Its actually pretty cool, it’s basically you have your own little page which you post your assignments on. You can even create your page background to your liking. Other duties away from the computer are just doing what the teacher tells you to do! Mainly signing in and out books, shelving away books, and also decorating and keeping this place clean. My strength in this class, to me, is signing in and out books in a pretty good speed. Doing other duties the teacher asks isn’t so bad either. It kills time instead of having the normal things done. And also cutting out bookmarks is pretty cool too! There was one thing I absolutely hated though. It was shelving books. That was my weakness. It always took me so long just to put away one cart of books. The things I like about this class were that it was pretty relaxing. I got to get away from the stress from all the other classes and just sit back, relax, and have fun in the library. There was also a bunch of books you wouldn’t know about unless you took this course. It ranges from fictional books to non-fiction and books that even educate you about street life. Well, I’ve already told you what I disliked and that was shelving books. Worst part of this experience, but someone has to do it right!

It takes a lot to become a great librarian or a great library student assistant. You need to know your books. What kind of category to what types of books are good to read. Memorizing sections with specific types of books is a great skill to have for your library so you don’t need to search it up in the catalogue. For a project next semester kids should find out what specific types of books go where in the library and write it down. That could be a possible assignment for the next kids to do. I think this library is as good as it is already. Maybe there are just too many books and not enough shelves! Putting away books in places where it’s supposed to be and it can’t fit is sometimes a burden. This course gives you a lot of information on how books actually need to be shelves, not just thrown in random spots. One concern will be get ready to pick out random books that have been shelved improperly and get ready to clean up messy shelves!

This site goes to a place where it turns into a search engine. This is a powerful online reference system which offers a variety of proprietary full text databases and popular databases from leading information providers.

This database could provide all sort of subjects with lots of help and answers throughout the whole website. This refers you to books, websites, etc.

In this website, you can watch videos made by the National Film Board of Canada. There is a large variety of videos such as animations, documentaries, and educational videos.
This could be useful to students because if you are working on a subject and if you need videos to see abuot your specific subject, this is the site you need to go to.

In this website, its more of a childrens library for books of easy learning. It has categories sucha as sing-a-longs, non fiction books, language learning, audio books, and story books.
I would not recommend this site if you are a high school student because this website is basically a site for younger children who are curious about books and is easily categorized is many different types of books and such.




This database tells us whats going on with the world. It's basically tells us news about other nations and what kind of conflicts are happening with global issues. First-person information about events happening with the countries around the world.

This database would be great for students in their social studies class and even biology since it also has a section for health & medicine. This site is excellent for geography.





 This site gives definition for words of the English language, Canadian style. Any sort of word you need to define, you could use this database.

Students obviously know how to use a dictionary so this site would be pretty straight forward.

Bitstrips Reflections

In my opinion about my experience with using bitstrips was that it was very interesting and also something particularly different! Since I've never used that sort of program so it was pretty cool I'd have to say. You could basically make a story and using comics to make it seem sort of like a comedy with all the different faces you could make. There was one problem with it. Trying to make a story means using way too many boxes! Other than that, it was pretty fun and using different faces and body placements was cool.

A socials teacher could use this sort of program VERY well. To be specific, say you were a social studies teaching a class of grade 11s. You could get the students to make a bitstrip about World War 2 about Hitler's reign of power, or maybe even another dictator. A slide could be about his giving out his powerful speeches to the people of their country. It could also show how his country invaded other countries by force.
This program can replay the whole war picture by picture if done correctly.

Other school libraries

Ryan Le                                     Johnston Heights Secondary School

Johnston Heights Secondary school is another public high school located in surrey at 15350 99 Avenue. They have approximately 87 staff members. The only main staff member in the library is one Mrs. Barden, however, she is assisted by many student aides and volunteers. The official hours that the library operates on is 8 15am to 3 15pm, however they’re usually open from around 7 30am to 3 30pm unofficially. They also do have a library catalogue online. On the left side of the homepage is many helpful links to students who may be interested, such as; online resources, educational links, library science, library club, and even library technology. The one main policy that is enforced by the staff at the Johnston Heights library is the thought that the library is a place for quiet academic study and only quiet study, the enforce the policy that if students wish to verbally quiz each other or something of that nature, they do so in the cafeteria or halls.

                                                                     North Surrey Secondary School

North Surrey Secondary school is a public high school in surrey that is commonly considered to be the neighbor of Johnston Heights Secondary school as they are similar in many ways. The school is located on 15945 96 Avenue. They have approximately 73 staff members( a little less than that of Johnston Heights). The main librarian at this establishment is one Ms. Cameron, also assisted by student volunteers. The official hours are 8 00am to 3 00pm. The policy of the library differs a little bit from that of Johnston Heights as it does not actually enforce a list of rules, as they believe that all students will behave respectfully towards the library. They do also have a library catalogue located online on the left side of the page, as well as the same helpful links that the Johnston Heights Secondary Library shows. The books there may be borrowed for a period of 4 weeks, and although there are no fines, students will automatically be charged for books not returned. North Surrey’s library also consists of 14 computers that are used for work purposes only.

Fleetwood Park Secondary School

Fleetwood Park Secondary school is a public high school also located in Surrey. Its address is 7940 156st, and they have approximately 76 staff members, almost the same as North Surrey Secondary School. The Fleetwood Park Secondary School library website differs significantly from the previous two and consists of different information. However, they do provide students with information and resources regarding many of the school courses, academic and otherwise, as well as info on government exams. They also do

Although many people do not realize it, some education and at least some experience is needed to become a librarian at a public library. Several important steps are needed to become a librarian, firstly, a bachelor’s degree of almost any kind is required, meaning that almost no degree can refrain you from a position as a public librarian, certain law degrees can enable you to be a librarian in a legal field, or science degree in a medical library field etc. After getting a bachelor’s degree, it is then necessary to enroll in a one or two year known as the library master’s program and then obtain an information studies degree.

A very common myth is that librarians only duties lie in stacking books and telling patrons where specific books are located, but contrary to common belief, librarians actually have much to do, such as sorting out specific literary materials, they must help everyone in the library locate resources they are in need of, a librarian must also use actual books and electronic equipment to ensure that the information they gather from resources is authentic and reliable. Minimal accounting goes hand in hand with being a librarian, as they must decide from time to time how to utilize their funding.

To conclude, being a successful librarian requires more dedication, work, and studying than the average person might be led to believe, numerous college and university courses may be needed as well as having the personality to deal with the numerous problems that may be faced.  And every librarian knows that even after getting a bachelor’s degree and a information or library studies degree, the learning does not end.

In this article, it tells us that there are toxic chemicals in everyday items such as erasers, shoes, pencil cases, and even sex toys. This group of chemicals is known as phthalates and a study group focused of that group of chemicals which is banned in the European Union since 1999 for the safety of the children and could damage their sexual development as children. Even in big supermarkets they store hundreds of items containing this toxic chemical and routinely used by children. A study shows that one type of phthalates that is particularly harmful for humans was found in an eraser which that level would be banned in other toys.


In my opinion, this study really mean alot because it damages heath, plus it is dangerous for children and affects their development in being an adult. This chemical shouldn't be creeping around in plain sight, but should be banned not just from the European Union, but also Canada. The impact is huge because you never know what could have this sort of chemical unless you really dig deep. It is a dangerous situation if you leave a toddler unattended and the child starts to chew on random things around the house. It could lead to serious illness. In the story it tells us a scenario of how a student starts chewing on the end of his/her pencil eraser. Imagine if that was your child and he/her got really sick. Would you approve of those items? I think not. This is a big chemical around in basic everyday items.
